Day 01

(05 August 2023)

Heading off to Meemure

The first-ever crowdfunded archaeological excavation in Sri Lanka began on August 5, 2023, led by renowned archaeologist Senior Professor Raj Somadava. The site of the excavation lies amidst the stunning Dumbara (Knuckles) mountain range, accessible via a 6 km trek through a jungle.

This excavation follows Professor Somadeva’s previous discovery of a prehistoric village and cemetery in the area. Lack of funding previously hindered progress but Prof. Somadeva’s 2023 tour of Australia inspired expatriate Sri Lankans around the world to form Heritage Force Sri Lanka (HFSL) to support archaeological excavations.

HFSL fully funds the Meemurē excavation, including a documentary video, and aims to embark on more projects in the future. Ongoing support from heritage and archaeology enthusiasts is vital for unearthing and preserving Sri Lanka’s diverse cultural heritage, so HFSL welcomes them to join in these endeavours
